Question 22/XVIII - Broadband ISDN influence on principles for video coding Considering (a) that a CCITT Recommendation I.121 defines the basic principles for broadband ISDN and that a status report (annexed to relevant Questions) has been prepared on broadband aspects of ISDN; (b) that the characteristics of these broadband ISDN video services may differ significantly from pure distributive video services; (c) that CMTT have responsibility for producing Recommendations on video coding techniques for broadcast applications; (d) that CCITT have responsibility for producing Recommendations on video coding techniques for interactive services; (e) that it may be advantageous to use similar coding techniques for both interactive and distribution services; the following should be studied: 1. What new Recommendations are required to establish principles for the future development of video coding techniques for broadband ISDN video services applications? This should include: 1.1 the main characteristics of broadband ISDN which influence the choice of video coding techniques; 1.2 the capabilities for packetized video over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks and user-network interfaces.
