Question 17/XVIII - ISDN protocol reference model Considering (a) that CCITT Recommendation I.320 defines principles for modelling information flows in various ISDN configurations; (b) that there is a continuing need to model ISDN capabilities within a common framework or reference model which will facilitate the further development of ISDN protocols and associated architectures; the following should be studied: 1. What further methods of modelling and categorizing information flows and the corresponding layer service definitions in various ISDN configurations are required in Recommendation I.320 taking account of the needs of broadband services, improved (64 kbit/s) ISDN services new transfer modes, mobile services, interfaces to private networks, management and control functions, intelligent network services, universal personal telecommunications services and broadcast and multipoint modes of operation? 2. What further development of Recommendation I.320 is required? Note - In developing Recommendation I.320 account has been taken of the OSI layered model. In the further development of both the ISDN protocol reference model and the OSI layered model the continuing need for close alignment of the models is recognized. Studies should therefore be coordinated with Study Group VII and ISO.
