Question 24/VII - Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) management (continuation of part of Question 42/VII studied in 19851988 on OSI management) Considering (a) that OSI will be a principal means of interconnection between systems in both the information processing and telecommunication environments; (b) that ISO international standards are being developed for an OSI management framework extension to the OSI reference model and for services and protocols in the areas of accounting management, configuration management, fault management, performance management and security management; (c) that OSI management for CCITT applications is needed and will be relevant to PDNs, ISDNs, Signalling System No. 7 networks and TMN; (d) that liaison both within the CCITT and with ISO and IEC is highly desirable to ensure, where applicable, the consistent and common development of management standards, therefore, work should continue to determine: 1. OSI reference model What extensions are required to Recommendation X.200 to define an OSI management framework for CCITT applications? 2. Management information structure What is required to satisfy the needs of CCITT applications regarding the structure of management information? 3. Management services and protocols What is required to satisfy the needs of CCITT applications regarding OSI management services and protocols? 4. Layer management What is required to satisfy the needs of CCITT applications regarding requirements and coordination of the management among individual layers? 5. Liaison What is necessary to maintain cooperation with other international organizations (e.g., ISO/IEC JTC 1) in activities concerning OSI management?
